Kevin Whelan is the Professor of Dietetics and Head of Department of Nutritional Sciences at King’s College London. Professor Whelan is a Principal Investigator leading a research programme investigating the interaction between diet and the gut microbiome in health and in gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease and disorders of gut-brain interaction including irritable bowel syndrome, functional constipation and functional bloating. He has published over 200 journal articles on fibre, probiotics, prebiotics, the low FODMAP diet, proteins, emulsifiers and ultra-processed foods. His research has been funded by research councils (Medical Research Council, National Institute of Health Research) and charities, and he has undertaken numerous large randomised controlled trials of dietary interventions, as well as publishing best practice recommendations for dietary research.

Professor Whelan is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition that provides independent risk assessment and advice to UK Government and Departments. He is a Founding Trustee of the Academy of Nutrition Sciences and on the editorial board of the Journal of Human Nutrition and Dietetics and Gut Microbiome. In 2012 he was awarded the Nutrition Society Cuthbertson Medal for clinical nutrition, in 2017 was appointed a Fellow of the British Dietetic Association and in 2018 delivered the Dr Elsie Widdowson Memorial Lecture.
